On the 8th of March 2025, the SSY took to the streets of Glasgow for International Women’s Day, joined by other groups from the radical left.
The rally took place on the steps of Buchanan Street and was organised by Rosa, an international organisation that emphasises socialist feminism.
“We look at feminism from a materialism perspective and apply Marxist lenses to it, but we also contribute our own lived experience, our own logic, our own reasoning,” said Eden, a member of Rosa and an organiser of the rally. ‘We can break down our own internalised barriers and come to a deeper understanding of the struggle.’
The afternoon kicked off with a welcome from Rosa, talking about the importance of including the voices of all women as part of the feminist movement, addressing the crowd of waving trans and Palestine flags, and leading a series of chants.
The rally also offered members of the crowd an opportunity to speak. A member of Rosa talked more about intersectionality, and the importance of fighting the ban on puberty blockers and access to abortions, and considering bodily autonomy as an essential part of feminism.
Another speaker from the crowd talked about the historical origins of feminism as part of the workers movement, and the oppression of women of capitalism.
A speaker from the SSY also spoke about the importance of including non-binary people within feminism, and how feminism is an essential part of the socialist movement.
The day also concluded with Rosa setting up a pinata covered in the faces of male government leaders, business owners and examples of homophobic and sexist language, before allowing children in the crowd to take turns to smash it. The pinata was filled with snacks, which the crowd distributed amongst themselves as the afternoon ended.
