Superman: A reminder of what’s good

2025’s Superman, directed by James Gunn, is a love letter to the original concept of Superheroes seen in comics of the 40s and 50s. This film’s writing perfectly captures the compassionate, hope-inspiring character that is Superman through how it expresses just how much he will do to protect and improve others’ lives.

This is the Superman who values life so much that he’s willing to save both people and animals in harm’s way, the Superman who will go out of his way to avoid and reduce the amount of property damage caused by his battles, which is certainly a refreshing sight.

Even Superman’s costume is deeply reminiscent of the original Superman design from the late 1930s and the All-Star Superman comic run from 2011 – even down to the iconic red trunks outside his outfit, which most recent Superman adaptations have moved away from.

David Corenswet, who plays Superman, embodies the character of Superman perfectly. However, he is far from the only highlight in this film –  the whole cast is great.

Nicholas Hoult plays Superman’s iconic foe, Lex Luthor, who radiates the pride, spite, and jealousy which is so core to Lex’s character flawlessly. The hatred Lex holds for Superman throughout the film is truly palpable.

Rachel Brosnahan was perfectly cast as Lois Lane –  it practically looks like she’s been pulled straight from the comics and paired with the writing, Brosnahan’s able to perfectly display the confident, determined journalist that Lois is iconic for. This is great as it’s very important to remember Lois is a reporter first and foremost, not just a swooning damsel for Superman to save. She’s capable and driven, yet is also able to have more vulnerable moments with Superman without that distracting or taking away from her character.

However, the undeniable highlight of the film is Edi Gathegi’s Mr Terrific, stealing every scene he’s in. It was amazing to see Gathegi get the opportunity to embrace and truly become an iconic character. This is especially enjoyable to see as the last time Gathegi played a hero was back in 2011s X-men First Steps, where his character Darwin’s powers went tragically under-used, and he was killed off almost immediately. This actually resulted in Gathegi being hesitant to audition for the role of Mr Terrific.  After hearing that James Gunn was specifically excited to see Gathegi’s audition tape, he went for it – and thank goodness he did.

Mr Terrific is treated as an equal to Superman, not some sidekick or forgettable side character; he is given the agency and respect his character deserves. It’s truly refreshing to see a black Superhero who is stoic, calculated, and principled being the smartest person in the room, he’s Mr Goddamn Terrific!

Something that can’t be overlooked is the relevance of the plot. The primary conflict of the movie is caused by a wealthy, highly militarised Eastern European nation called Boravia. It is an ally of the United States and receives funding from the billionaire Lex Luthor.  Boravia attempts to invade and take over a neighbouring country by the name of Jarhanpur. This country is depicted as a smaller, less-developed Middle Eastern country, in contrast with the high-tech Boravia, which completely lacks the military capability to successfully fight back against the Boravian invasion.

Many viewers saw this plot thread as a commentary on the ongoing genocide in Palestine. However, James Gunn has stated it is not, and was written before October 7th –  which simply goes to show how relevant the themes of militarised countries invading others for land and oil are, all while actively putting masses of human lives in danger and while taking no accountability or caution.

Overall, Superman is a must-watch. It’s a beautiful, inspiring film about hope, compassion, and being a good person. The film is guaranteed to make you smile or even bring you some hope when you need it most.
